Dubai-based port and terminal operator DP World reported a profit attributable to owners of $313 million for the first half of 2020, a decrease of 58.5 % from the last year’s equivalent of $753 million. However, the company reported a revenue growth of 17.7 % on a reported basis having booked $4.07 billion in revenue for the period. An industry survey into the transition to using compliant low-sulphur fuel oil since the beginning of 2020 shows that the switch hasn’t been completely pain-free for shipowners as fluctuating fuel oil properties lead to a myriad of issues. The survey focuses on issues such as increased sludge discharge, clogging of fuel pipes, preheaters, fuel separators and fuel filters, fuel pumps getting stuck, problems with fuel injection and poor ignition of fuel oil.... Saudi Ports Authority is the latest port to prohibit discharges of exhaust wash water in its waters from ships fitted with open-loop scrubbers, one of the alternative measures of being compliant with the IMO 2020 Sulphur Cap. The port authority is acting on instructions received from the General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental protection. The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) has managed to repatriate the fatigued crew members of the South Korean-owned bulk carrier Contamines after the seafarers downed their tools after working on board with expired contracts and approaching a year at sea.
