NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is responding to a 22 barge breakaway at mile marker 54 on the Mississippi River, near West Point a la Hache, Wednesday.
All 22 barges were loaded with coal and petroleum coke, a coal like substance.
The Mississippi River was closed between mile markers 51 to 54 at 12:58 p.m.
The Coast Guard is working with the responsible party to ensure all barges are accounted for.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
