Update: Coast Guard, Kauai Fire suspend active search for missing swimmer near Queen's Bath, Kauai

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard and Kauai Fire Department suspended the search Sunday for missing 28-year-old Mykola Grebeniuk who was swept out to sea Thursday near Queen's Bath, in Princeville, Kauai."Suspending an active search and rescue case without definitive resolution is one of the most difficult decisions to make,” said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, commander, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. “We saturated the area in an attempt to locate Mr. Grebeniuk, but pending further developments, we have decided to suspend the active search. Our prayers go out to his loved ones.”On-scene assets searched a combined 73 hours, approximately 6,206 square miles and deployed two self-locating datum marker buoys.Involved in the search were an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew and MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point as well as the crews of USCGC Galveston Island and USCGC Kittiwake.Kauai Fire Department also searched with helicopter and jet ski crews.

Watchstanders at Sector Honolulu received a relayed call at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, from the Kauai Fire Department stating a 23-year-old male had been swept off the rocks at Queen's Bath. The watchstanders immediately directed the launch of the Dolphin helicopter and Hercules aircrews and issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast requesting the assistance of any mariners in the area. No imagery is available for this case.
