NEW YORK – The U.S. Coast Guard, National Park Service and Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society are scheduled to participate in a historic re-enactment ceremony, Tuesday, at Federal Hall to celebrate the Coast Guard’s 225th birthday.
During the ceremony, actors will portray the signing of the Coast Guard into existence with George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. Alexander Hamilton will speak, including “Charge of the First Officers”.
Believing the coasts of the fledgling United States needed protection from pirates, smuggling and foreign intrusions, Hamilton recommended the creation of a "system of cutters." In response, the U.S. Congress passed the legislation forming the Revenue-Marine, the forerunner to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Today, the Coast Guard is one of the five United States armed forces, with a rich history of life-saving missions, guarding U.S. coasts and providing support during war time.
