1 dead, 2 injured in boat collision near Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg, Florida

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — One person was killed and two people were injured when two boats collided near Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg, Friday evening.

The names of the dead and injured are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

One person was cofirmed deceased by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue emergency medical services technicians at the scene.

"Our deepest sympathies are with the family and loved ones of the boater killed in this tragic collision," said Capt. Gregory Case, commander of Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg. "We wish the injured a full and speedy recovery."

The two injured boaters were transported to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue EMS.  One person was in critical condition and the second suffered minor non life-threatening injuries.  

Coast Guardsmen heard the collision, which occurred just outside Station St. Petersburg, at approximately 9:50 p.m. Friday. A Station St. Petersburg crew aboard a 29-foot Response Boat-Small was launched immediately and began providing medical assistance to two of the injured boaters. One of the two boaters was later declared deceased by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue EMS at the scene.

A third injured boater was brought to the station by the crew of the second vessel involved in the collision.  The man was treated by Coast Guard and EMS crews prior to transport to Bayfront Medical Center. The remaining two boaters aboard the vessel were reported uninjured. 

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the collision.
