Update: Coast Guard suspends search for missing free diver near Hana, Maui

October 17, 2016

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard suspended the joint search Sunday night for a free diver who originally went missing while swimming near Hana, Maui, Thursday.

Josh Goodwin, 40, remains missing.

"The decision to suspend a search is one of the hardest decisions a commanding officer has to make," said Capt. Michael Long, commander, Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. "Our deepest sympathy goes out to Josh's family and friends during this difficult time."

On-scene assets searched a total area of more than 1,950 square miles and deployed three self-locating datum marker buoys over four days.

Involved in the search were: - MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point- Crews of USCGC Kittiwake (WPB-87316) and USCGC Galveston Island (WPB 1349) from Honolulu- Air and surface assets with divers from the Maui Fire Department - Navy P-3 Orion fixed wing and MH-60 helicopter aircrews from squadrons at Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay  The initial report that Goodwin was missing came into the Maui Fire Department Thursday prompting them to begin searching. That search was expanded to include the Coast Guard and other agencies Friday. At that time, an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast was issued alerting mariners in the area to keep a sharp lookout and report any sightings to the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center and Coast Guard crews were dispatched to begin their search. No imagery is available for this case.
