Coast Guard searches for overdue boaters

March 18, 2016

ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Coast Guard is searching for four boaters aboard a 47-foot white with blue stripe Hunter sailboat Friday. The overdue boaters departed from Monterey to Morro Bay Thursday morning.

Crews from Coast Guard Station Morro Bay,  Station Monterey and Air Station Sacramento are conducting a search offshore from Monterey to Los Angeles for Taylor Harper, Eli Harper, Erik Westerhof and Al.

Friday morning, Harper, an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, was reported overdue by his family to Coast Guard Station Monterey watchstanders for assistance.

"A search effort covering a large geographic area like this one always involves multiple communities in the Coast Guard, and the Rescue Coordination Centers work constantly with our aircraft, boat crews and cutters to develop effective searches for mariners who may be in distress," said Lt. Cmdr. Nathaniel Johnson, Coast Guard Eleventh District search and rescue mission coordinator. "We also greatly appreciate any assistance from the public who can aid in our search by providing sighting information or details that can help narrow down the search area."

Anyone with information that may assist with the search is encouraged to call the Coast Guard Eleventh District command center at 510-437-3701.
