Coast Guard rescues 5 aboard sinking boat 7 miles east of Indian River, De.

PHILADELPHIA — The Coast Guard rescued five people from a boat taking on water off the coast of Delaware, Wednesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay received a distress call via VHF-FM radio channel 16, from boaters aboard the 20-foot recreational boat at about 11:25 a.m. 

Watchstanders dispatched a 25-foot response boat-small crew and a 47-foot motor life boat crew from Coast Guard Station Indian River and an MH-65 dolphin helicopter air crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City to respond to the boaters location, 7-miles east of Indian River.

Station Indian River boat crews arrived on scene and transferred all persons aboard to the RB-M at about 11:40 a.m.

The RB-S crew towed the vessel into South Shore Marina where the boat was trailered.

"They were all wearing life jackets and had a VHF radio aboard, which helped us identify exactly where they were, so we could maintain communication with them until help arrived," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Joscelyn Greenwell, the officer of the day.  "The man remained calm while he was talking to us on the radio and that helped our watchstander to correctly gather the information we needed so we could get them help as quickly as possible." 

No injuries were reported.
