Coast Guard member sentenced for violating UCMJ article

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – A Coast Guard member charged with violating a number of Articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice pled guilty to one charge and was sentenced Monday during a general court martial in Norfolk, Va.

Petty Officer 1st Class Jay Wade, 31, pled guilty in accordance with a pre-trial agreement to one specification of violation of Article 128, UCMJ – Assault.  He pled not guilty to two specifications of violation of Article 107, UCMJ – False Official Statement as well as two specifications of violation of Article 120, UCMJ – Sexual Assault.  Those charges were dismissed.  Wade was sentenced to six months confinement, reduction of rank to E-3, and forfeiture of $750 of pay for six months.

Vice Adm. William Lee, commander of the Coast Guard Atlantic Area, referred charges against Wade to a general court-martial on Aug. 4, 2015, following an Article 32 hearing.  The Article 32 hearing, which is similar to a grand jury, was completed on June 25, 2015.  Wade pled guilty and was sentenced at a general court-martial on January 11, 2016 as part of a plea agreement.

Wade was assigned to Cutter Northland which is homeported in Portsmouth, Va., when the alleged misconduct occurred.
