Coast Guard, local responders searching for missing free diver near Hana, Maui

HONOLULU — Personnel from the Coast Guard, Maui Police Department and Maui Fire Department are searching for a missing free diver near Hana, Maui, Friday. 

Missing is 40-year-old Josh Goodwin. Goodwin was last seen wearing a blue shirt and is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall with dark hair. 

Goodwin was last seen on shore near Hana and was expected to swim out to meet a friend approximately 200 yards away offshore, but never arrived.

At approximately 11 a.m., an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point launched to conduct a search along with the crew of the USCGC Kittiwake (WPB-87316), homeported out of Honolulu. Air assets and divers from the Maui Fire Department and Maui Police Department are also assisting in the search. 

An Urgent Marine Information Broadcast has been issued alerting mariners in the area to keep a sharp lookout and report any sightings to the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Maui overheard police department scanner traffic from central dispatch at 9:30 a.m., regarding a missing free diver. After confirming with Maui Police Department personnel that there was a missing diver, Station Maui relayed the information to Sector Honolulu.

Weather conditions are currently reported as 17 mph winds with waves at 6 feet and approximately 9 miles of visibility.
