Coast Guard: Celebrate New Year’s Eve safely

December 31, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Coast Guard urges mariners to practice safe boating during New Year’s Eve celebrations Wednesday.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville command center are on duty all year round, including New Year’s Eve, and will monitor VHF Channel 16 for emergencies.

The Coast Guard reminds mariners to only use flares in emergency situations. If you, or someone aboard your vessel, accidentally launch a flare, it is requested you notify the Coast Guard immediately. This will avoid an unnecessary deployment of Coast Guard boats, aircraft and personnel.

Boaters are also reminded to have a designated sober boat operator aboard. It is highly advised you do not operate your vessel under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Driving a boat under the influence can have the same tragic effects as driving a car under the influence. For your safety, and the safety of your friends, family and fellow boaters, don’t do it.

If you are going to celebrate aboard a boat, ensure it has enough life jackets for everyone in your party. The Coast Guard advises the wear of life jackets during a boat trip at all times. A life jacket can greatly increase your chances of survival if you fall overboard.

If you feel you are in danger, call for help. If your situation changes and the danger passes, mariners are asked to notify the Coast Guard that their situation has changed and is under control again. However, boaters are reminded that placing a hoax distress call over the radio can have legal consequences. You may also be charged a fine for placing a hoax call.

The Coast Guard wishes everyone a safe and happy new year.
