Coast Guard assists 2 kayakers in southern Chesapeake Bay

July 31, 2016

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard assisted two stranded kayakers Saturday in Chesapeake Bay off Oyster Point.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received a call forwarded by Eastern Shore of Virginia 911 Dispatch at 7:55 p.m. that two male kayakers had swamped their kayaks in shallow water approximately six miles south of Oyster Point and could not continue paddling.

Sector Hampton Roads launched a 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew from Coast Guard Station Cape Charles at 8:40 p.m. The RB-S crew arrived on scene at 11:15 p.m. and located the kayakers, guided by one of the stranded men’s headlamps. The kayakers waded through the shallow water and climbed aboard the response boat.

The RB-S crew transported the men and their kayaks back to Oyster Point by 1:19 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

“It’s good for people to know the area and know their surroundings before going out,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Luis Arroyo, the coxswain of the RB-S crew. “Always have a back-up plan to get home.”
